Rouven F. Bodenheimer, vice president of the DIS, and Haruo Okada, president of the Japan Association of Arbitrators, signed a cooperation agreement on 12 March 2025 during the joint event “DIS@JAA Arbitration Day: How to Facilitate Civil Law Platform and Proceeding of Arbitration/Mediation-collaborative Progress” in Tokyo.
Mr. Bodenheimer used his speech to identify the similarities between the two organisations and emphasised their shared vision: the promotion of best practices in arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. Together with the Japan Association of Arbitrators, the DIS hopes to explore opportunities for joint training programs, academic research, and professional exchange, creating valuable opportunities for arbitrators, practitioners, and businesses, in both Germany and Japan.
On 24 March, in implementing this Cooperation Agreement, the DIS and the JAA jointly organized with the Osaka Bar Association a talk by the DIS-President Stefan Kröll on “Participation of Third Parties in Arbitration” in Osaka. In his talk Professor Kröll mentioned inter alia the DIS-Third Party Notice Rules which attracted considerable interests from the audience.
