9 - 12 September 2024, Berlin

Practitioners and academics from near and far gathered in Germany’s capital from 9-12 September 2024 for the third annual Berlin Dispute Resolution Days.

Founded as a means of international exchange on alternative dispute resolution in 2022 in collaboration with independent practitioners, the German Arbitration Institute and its under-40 arm (the “DIS” and “DIS40” respectively) together with Humboldt University of Berlin, the now yearly event has quickly become a fixture in the disputes conference calendar, with collaboration also expanding to include the German Ministry of Justice.

The Berlin Dispute Resolution Days was anchored around the DIS’ Autumn Conference and offered participants the opportunity to engage in more than 30 “side events” across Berlin running the gamut from industry-, sector-, country- and region-specific panels, to practice-oriented discussions, networking opportunities, cultural activities, and even a firm launch.

Highlights of the week included:

  • Lucy Reed’s keynote address at the 7th Karl-Heinz Boeckstiegel Lecture on “Modern Mass Claims, Up to Ukraine:  Lessons for International Arbitration”;
  • Humboldt Dispute Resolution Conference, providing recent graduates and alumni the International Dispute Resolution LL.M. program at Humboldt University of Berlin the opportunity to present on topics at the vanguard of ADR and arbitration;
  • DIS40 Autumn Conference 2024 - Managing Commercial Disputes: The ADR Toolbox Beyond Arbitration, focusing on use of mediation and other alternative ways of dispte resolition, including live training sessions
  • Industry- and sector- events related to construction, energy, ESG, and franchising,
  • Country- and regional- events related to Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, India, Poland, Switzerland, the United States, CEE and Asia Pacific;
  • Practice-related events focusing on the international components of disputes, third party funding, risk and dispute mitigation, and private enforcement; and
  • Breakfast and evening networking receptions, including “Women, Art and Arbitration” networking event at the Fotografskia gallery which served as a fusion between the Berlin Dispute Resolution Days and Berlin Art Week.

In an effort to maximize green travel, flexible rail transport could be arranged for event participants allowing ticket holders the opportunity to travel up to two days before and after the conference.

This year’s organizing committee was composed of Jennifer Bryant, Alessndro Covi, Richard Happ, Courtney Lotfi, and Alicja Zielinska-Eisen.
