On 19 and 20 July, the Doctoral Seminar on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution at the Bucerius Law School, organized by the Center for International Dispute Resolution (CIDR) in cooperation with the DIS and directed by Stefan Kröll, welcomed 17 doctoral students specializing in arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.
The participants, who came from universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, engaged in lively discussions as 11 speakers presented their research projects over the course of the two-day event.
The seminar organised due to the generous support of the Karl-Heinz Böckstiegel Foundation covered a wide range of topics, including impact of the EU competition on sport and commercial arbitration, enforcement of intra-EU investment awards in the US, application of the article 267 TFEU in Swiss legal practice, and exclusive state court jurisdiction agreements as well as the cases of its explicit exclusion. Furthermore, provisions of the German Packaging Act (VerpackG), the role of AI in arbitration, the impact of EU economic sanctions on arbitration participants, business and human rights arbitration cases, the concept of "Prozessstandschaft" and the liability of litigation funders were discussed. Participants were able to share their research with an expert audience and gain new impulses for their work.
In addition to the formal presentations, participants had plenty of opportunity to network and exchange ideas. This year's Doctoral Seminar once again made a significant contribution to the training of the next generation of academics and practitioners in the field of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. The high level of interest shown by participants in attending the Doctoral Seminar again next year is a testament to its continuing success.
