On Monday, 9 September 2024 during the Berlin Dispute Resolution Days, the Polish-German Arbitration Group hosted by Gleiss Lutz held a conference on “Judicial Independence in Times of Political Uncertainty: The Polish and German Perspective”.

The event was moderated by Monika Hartung, President of the SAKIG Arbitral Council, and Karl Pörnbacher, Co-Chair of the Polish-German Arbitration Group, and gathered over 30 Polish and German arbitration and litigation practitioners and in-house lawyers.

The four speakers: Polish judge Olimpia Baranska-Maluszek and Polish Ministry of Justice director Marta Kożuchowska-Warywoda, German judge Thomas Guddat, and Ahmed Aksu, legal advisor to the Vice-Chair of the SPD Parliamentary Group, shared their insights on the topic focusing, among other things, on the judges’ appointment procedures, then diving into the likelihood and the consequences of the political influences into this process while eventually discussing what risks the rule of law faces and how to mitigate them both on operational and legislative level.

Should you be interested in the groups’ engagements, please contact its co-chairs Karl Pörnbacher and Patryk Kulig.
