Belgrade has been the Eastern European centre for arbitration over the last weekend: the XVI. Belgrade Open Pre-Moot, traditionally co-organized and supported by DIS, was held on 16 to 17 March 2024. With 56 teams from 24 different countries and 300 arbitrators, is was one of the largest pre-moots leading to the competition in Vienna.
The Pre-Moot was preceded by the XIV. Belgrade Arbitration Conference on 15 March 2024 which also included a panel on ICC and DIS perspectives on new claims, consolidation and mandatory rules.

Arbitration Backstage: How to Choose, Prepare and Cross-Examine Fact and Expert Witnesses – Standards and Trends
The DIS40, in cooperation with the Serbian Arbitration Association under 40, successfully organised and hosted its very first event on 16 March 2024 in Belgrade/Serbia. The panel discussion focussed on the intricate processes involved in selecting, preparing, and cross-examining fact and expert witnesses in international arbitration. The event took place in one of Belgrade’s historic theatres with over 50 participants from 10 different countries.
The moderator Miljana Bigović (DLA Piper, Stockholm) together with the three panelists Marleen Krueger (WilmerHale, Berlin/London), Gerrit Niehoff (Baker&McKenzie, Frankfurt), and Blagoje Milošević (Schoenherr, Belgrade) set the scene. They discussed key factors in witness selection, strategies for effective cross-examination, balancing leading and open-ended questions, distributing the workload among team members and tactics for undermining the credibility of expert witnesses.
